Understanding Your Skin

August 31, 2017

One of the biggest things we do at Body Factory is care for your skin – both its appearance and its health. To understand our treatments, it helps to understand the structure of your skin. That means understanding not just its structure, but how its structure – and needs – change depending on which part of the body you’re looking at.

The skin’s three layers

The skin that covers every part of your body is made up the same three layers. First, there’s the epidermis, or surface layer. It serves as your body’s first protective barrier. Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis. It’s made up of connective tissue, and contains hair follicles and sweat glands. Then, there’s the hypodermis. It’s made up of still more connective tissue as well as fat.

How does skin vary across the body’s surface?

The most difference between, for example, the skin on your palms and the skin on your face is its thickness. That’s why some Body Factory treatments are only safe for certain parts of the body – a laser that lifts the most superficial layers of your facial skin would barely make a difference on your hands. And some parts of your body, like the thighs and abdomen, hold more fat in the hypodermis.

How is the face unique?

The skin on your face is made up of smaller cells than the skin on any other part of your body. That’s why so many Body Factory treatments are only for your face. It’s also why moisturizing is such a bigger concern when it comes to your face than any other part of your body. Smaller cells and a thinner membrane mean you lose water from your facial skin very quickly, allowing dry spots that lead to fine lines and wrinkles.

Of course, on the other end of the spectrum lies oily skin with problems like blemishes and blackheads. That’s because the skin on your face is also very rich in pores. This allows your body to release toxins and oil, which causes blemishes. And sometimes a simple facewash just won’t address these deeper impurities. That’s why so many Body Factory treatments are designed to be gentle enough not to harm the thin, porous skin on your face – but targeted enough to deeply cleanse your pores of these toxins.
